Description
The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens delivers a superb combination of cutting-edge performance, compact construction and brilliant resolving power that’s great for sports and wildlife photography. The lens features one fluorite and one super UD element to help provide impressive contrast and resolution with reduced chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range. Canon’s new Air Sphere Coating (ASC) helps significantly reduce backlit flaring and ghosting, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces help lessen smears and fingerprints. A 9-blade circular aperture renders beautiful, soft backgrounds, and a 3 mode (standard, panning and exposure only) Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 4 steps of image correction. The new inner focusing AF system helps ensure fast and accurate focus down to 3.2 ft. with a .31x maximum magnification. Usability enhancements include a rotation-type zoom ring with adjustable zoom torque for more precise, customizable zoom performance, a redesigned tripod mount that can be attached and detached without removing the lens from the camera, and an all-new lens hood with a side window that makes it simple to adjust specialty filters-like polarizers-without the need to remove the hood. Ruggedly constructed with advanced dust and water sealing for durability in a range of environments, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is a stellar performer with refined controls for a wide variety of situations. Works as expected. Good value refurbished.

I purchased this renewed lens as an upgrade for a third-party lens I’ve been using for more than two years.
The Canon lens is superior in every way – autofocus is quick and decisive, and the extender does not appear to affect image quality. I am ecstatic with the use of this lens and the 1.4x extender. Together they give me the reach I need to make quality images of subjects I sometimes have to shoot from a distance.

The description said “renewed” with a 1 year Canon warranty and all original items and at arms length no visible marks. I received a third party bag, third party lens hood, several scratches on the body, several scratches on the element, visible dust inside the lens behind the front glass. Even the color of the lens body looked a little “off”. I’ve owned one of these before. I can’t belive the description was way off on this. I would almost question if it even had a warranty as this item looks very used. Will never buy a renewed item ever again!

Everything works fine mechanically and it takes good photos. I did not give it 5 stars because of the scuffs and rub marks, something not expected since we paid a bit more for the “like new” description. This is the second refurbished lens I have bought through Amazon, the first one more than a year ago and I am happy with both so far.

This lens is an amazing value for the clear – detailed images and zoom range.

Packed perfectly. Came in the original box with original styrofoam packing materials, had I not known I bought renewed it could have been mistaken as new. Included both front and back caps, hood and case as shown in the pictures. Also had the original instructions. Lens shows no signs of wear nor abuse in any way. Already had a chance to try it out and works as it should.

Like my new Cannon 100-400 zoom lens. Lens works great. Happy with overall purchase.

My lens was delivered early evening but I did take a couple shots outside at a passing airplane. The auto focus seems to be working as it should. The lens is a little heavy but nothing I can’t deal with. I have two airshows I’m attending in the next four weeks so it will get a workout.
An update my review: I took my lens to the JAX Sky and Sea airshow and was not disappointed. The autofocus worked flawlessly and I’m very happy with my purchase. I’m taking it to another airshow next month.

I bought this lens because my Tamron did not often focus up to 400mm with distinct quality. I read countless reviews before deciding to try the Canon 100-400. For me it is an expensive investment to an already too large number of lenses. Some of the reviews said that the Canon did not autofocus with the 70D, and some said it was just incompatible. Most said it was fantastic, clear and though a bit heavy, a great wildlife investment. What I have found in taking multiple pictures is: 1. It is quite compatible with my 70D Canon. I am not using it with a 1x converter and don’t intend to. 2. It autofocuses MOST of the time quickly and with amazing precision all the way to 400. 3. When it doesn’t autofocus quickly, I move it back to 300, focus and move back to 400 and usually it works. Usually at 400 mm, it doesn’t like to autofocus quickly because the colors are too much the same and I think that the autofocus has problems at 400mm when the colors or background are similar. 4. At first I could not get it to auto focus easily on big birds flying high at 400, but I had forgotten to check the focus area. Make sure you have it on 1 spot (not 19 spot auto) and it is perfect. You can also go to, the manual focus is great then and fast. 5. If you again pull back the focus a bit, find your bird and then open it back, you get it unless the bird is super fast. 6. I love experimenting with the focus, evaluative and spot and landscape focus. I’m going with spot when bird shooting and this lens is amazing. Above you see the zoom at 400mm and this border collie was looking at me, and the fence around. Another addition after using this lens quite a bit. If I ever get a Full Frame camera (doubt it) this lens is compatible. So my final analysis is that it is worth every penny. It feels incredibly sturdy, has the extra tripod stand adapter if you want to use two or put one on the lens itself. I have found that I can hand hold fairly easily down to 1/30. This lens also focuses on tight long area landscapes so particularly to shoot birds or animals in trees or woods you can spot autofocus on them. Nice nice crisp lens.

The lens itself performed as well as I hoped. Primary use is for my kids’ soccer games. Playing on an 11-a-side field, I needed the 400mm to reach the opposite side of the field. The auto-focus and image stabilization make for sharp action shots.
While I provide a 5-star rating, which is a direct reflection of the lens itself, I do dock a star for the description not matching what was received. The lens did come with the original Canon lens hood, and the tripod collar, but the lens bag/pouch was NOT an original product, nor did the lens come in the original Canon box. BUT, all of this does not take away from the lens itself. I would return everything to get all the original accessories as advertised, but being that this is a refurbished lens, I don’t want to take a chance of possibly getting an inferior refurbished lens.
